It’s just to the end up which begins to break down, but the smack-right up finale rescues it from the ‘red’. Admirably staged and smartly dialogued, it’ll have no high problem in the traditions down their extremely unsightly term.” [ 8 ]

Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin said “The movie actions within a quick rate, the brand new dialogue try smooth and you will characterisations generally energetic. This new film’s copywriter and manager, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess games, to possess mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a great cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) worked in the local casino and you will old good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). New caustically epigrammatic software, new cast’s suavely controlled gestures regarding love and you can hazard, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may smartly cocky pictures (plus their governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet detail by detail spectacle a low profile vintage of the style.” [ ten ]

Although the spot follows a common pattern, the newest characterizations are fresh and the activities suitable so you can overbalance. It is generally an issue of enjoying Mr. Powell go through their paces fashionably when you are a large shed away from actors and you may performers give your standard service. Evelyn Keyes performs the great nothing woman exactly who brings about the new best in him and you can Ellen Received is the sleek and slinky vixen just who becomes him towards jams. Thomas Gomez was greasy since villain and you can Lee J. Cobb do an alternative able trip as a tired cops inspector just who in the long run shuts the way it is. A lot of sipping and you will puffing is accomplished by the the alarmed.” [ several ]
